Walk into any bedsheet aisle and you'll see thread counts shouted from every pack — 200TC, 400TC, 1000TC. But thread count alone doesn't tell you how a sheet will actually feel. Fabric type and weave matter just as much, if not more.
Cotton is breathable, durable, and gets softer with every wash — which is exactly why it's the most common bedsheet fabric in Indian homes. It handles humidity well and is easy to care for. Within cotton, the weave changes the feel:
Thread count is simply the number of threads woven per square inch. Beyond roughly 300–400, higher numbers often come from thinner, multi-ply threads counted individually — which can mean a denser but not necessarily better sheet. A well-made 200–300TC cotton percale will usually outlast and out-feel an inflated "1000TC" sheet made from lower-quality fiber.
For most of the year in North India, a cotton percale sheet is the safest, most comfortable choice — cool in summer, easy to layer with a light blanket in winter. If you run warm year-round, linen is worth the extra care. If you want a slightly plush, hotel-like feel for cooler months, sateen is a good pick.
