Blanket & Quilt Guide: Picking the Right Warmth for Indian Winters
A blanket bought for a North Indian hill-station winter will feel unbearable in a Chennai December. Blanket shopping in India isn't one-size-fits-all — it's really a question of matching weight to your specific climate.
Match weight to your region
North India / hill regions (Delhi, Punjab, Himachal, Kashmir) — heavier blankets or quilts, 300+ GSM, sometimes layered with a comforter on the coldest nights.
Central & Western India (Mumbai, Pune, MP) — mid-weight blankets, mainly needed through a short winter window.
South & coastal India (Chennai, Kerala, Bengaluru) — a light AC blanket or single-layer cotton throw is usually enough year-round.
Fabric types
Cotton blankets — breathable, easy to wash, ideal for mild winters or AC-room use.
Fleece/mink blankets — soft, warm for their weight, but less breathable — better suited to genuinely cold nights than humid ones.
Quilted/razai-style — a fabric shell with fill (usually cotton or synthetic), the traditional choice for serious North Indian winters.
AC blankets deserve their own category
If a blanket's only job is to take the edge off an air-conditioned room, a heavy winter blanket is overkill — a light single-layer cotton or microfiber AC blanket does the job without overheating and is easier to wash frequently.
Care and storage
Air out blankets in the sun before storing them away for the season — humidity trapped in folded fabric is what causes a musty smell and, in the worst case, mildew. Store in a breathable cotton bag rather than a sealed plastic one, especially in humid regions.
