Curtains do more than cover a window — they control light, add privacy, and set the tone of a room. Here's how to pick the right ones, room by room.
Before color or pattern, decide how much light the room needs to block:
Heavier fabrics like velvet and jacquard add warmth and a formal look, but they trap dust and need more upkeep — better suited to living rooms and less humid climates. Cotton and linen-blend curtains are lighter, breathe better, and are easier to wash — a practical everyday choice for bedrooms and kitchens.
Floor-length curtains that just skim the floor (or "puddle" slightly) look the most elegant and make ceilings feel taller. Sill-length curtains work well in kitchens and smaller windows where floor-length would feel heavy or get in the way.
If your walls or furniture already have a pattern, keep curtains solid or subtly textured. For plain, neutral rooms, a patterned or richly colored curtain can become the room's focal point. When in doubt, curtains one or two shades darker than your wall color rarely go wrong.
A curtain only hangs as well as its rod allows. Make sure the rod extends a few inches beyond the window frame on each side — this lets curtains fully clear the glass when open, so the window gets maximum light.
