Satin and velvet are the two curtain fabrics people most often compare when they want something richer than plain cotton or polyester. Both look premium, but they behave very differently in a room. Here's how to choose. For the basics of picking curtains room by room, see How to Choose the Right Curtains.
Choose satin for living rooms, drawing rooms and puja or festive spaces where you want the window to look bright and special, and for rooms that get a lot of daylight — the sheen shows best in natural light. Solid satin colours like navy, purple and red make a bold statement; printed satin (leaf, floral, mosaic and crackle designs) works on plain walls.
Choose velvet for bedrooms and formal sitting rooms where you want a richer, cosier feel, especially in winter. Velvet looks best in deeper or muted shades — mauve, slate blue, taupe or bronze.
Neither fabric replaces a true blackout curtain. If you need a fully dark room for daytime sleep, pick a curtain sold specifically as blackout.
Our satin and velvet curtains come in two lengths, both 4 ft wide per panel:
Measure from the curtain rod down to where you want the curtain to end, then pick the closer length. For wider openings, use two or more panels side by side. Our Curtain Measurement Guide walks through it step by step.
Both ranges have an eyelet (ring) header — the rod passes straight through the rings, so the curtain slides open and shut easily and falls into even, ripple-like folds without hooks or tapes.
Dry cleaning is recommended for both. If you hand-wash, use cold water and a mild detergent, don't wring, and dry away from direct sunlight to protect satin's sheen and velvet's pile.
