About Madrasi Towel

A Madrasi towel – also called a Madras towel or checked gamcha-style towel – is a thin, woven cotton towel with a bold checkered or striped pattern. It has been an everyday staple in Indian homes for generations because it is light, soaks up water quickly and dries fast, even in humid weather.

The towels here are 30 x 60 inches (about 76 x 152 cm), in 100% cotton, from brands like Big Shaktiman, Five Star, Amar Fabrix and Haikoo. Being thinner than a thick terry bath towel, a Madrasi towel folds small, packs easily for travel and dries overnight on a line – handy for daily bathing, the gym, temples or a quick hand-and-face towel.

Care: hand or machine wash in cold water, don't bleach, and dry in the sun or shade. The cotton gets softer with every wash; wash the first time separately as checked dyes can release a little colour.
